Our Mission

Dedicated to restoring and redistributing books to underserved communities.

Books are regularly removed from library shelves and school classrooms because their covers are damaged — not because the content has lost value. Second Spine collects those books, restores them by hand, and redistributes them to community members who need them, at no cost.

Reduce Waste

A worn cover is not a reason to throw away a book. We repair what would otherwise be discarded: readable, valuable books that just need a new outer layer.

Restore Access

Students and families shouldn't lose access to books because of physical damage. We keep books in circulation so more readers can find them.

Share Stories

Restored books are redistributed to underserved community members through our distribution partners — free, no cost to the recipient.

How It Works

From collection to community, in four steps.

  1. Collect

We gather used, damaged, or unwanted books from families, schools, and community partners. Drop-off boxes are available at the Saratoga Library.

  2. Sort

Each book is checked for readability, physical condition, age level, and donation fit. Books in good shape inside go forward; others are recycled responsibly.

  3. Restore

Volunteers remove damaged covers, create new covers and spines by hand, and prepare each book for reuse. No two restored books look exactly alike.

  4. Donate

Finished books are donated to libraries, classrooms, and community spaces where they can be read again, free to whoever needs them.

Our Story

Built by students.
Shared with readers.

Second Spine started as a service project in Saratoga, CA, built around a specific problem: books are being pulled from circulation because of damaged covers, not damaged content. We fix the covers and put the books back.

Covers tear. Spines crack. Libraries and schools remove books from their shelves. Those books still have value — they just need repair. We collect them, restore them by hand, and redistribute them to underserved community members who need them.

Currently partnering with the Saratoga Library and local schools to collect, restore, and redistribute books to community members who need them.
